The homophobic rant of an Australian preacher

The popular Australian Muslim Facebook page, followed by 2.5 million people, has in the past promoted extremism, anti-Semitism and martyrdom. On August 29, the page published a lecture given by an Australian Muslim preacher, praising him with the words: “A brilliant lecture on LGBT from a tradition[ti]onilistic Islamic vision in accordance with the Koran and the Sunnah [Islamic traditions] and not according to liberals, secularists or modernists who want to compromise and water down their beliefs.

The preacher so warmly recommended is none other than Abu Bakr Zaoud of the extremist Ahl As-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah (ASWJ, “the family of those who follow the ways of the Prophet and his companions”). This local branch of an international fundamentalist Salafist organization is considered one of the most radical Muslim groups in Australia. In 2018, and even earlier in 2022, AIJAC denounced anti-Semitism, calls for jihad against Israel, and the radicalism of ASWJ in general and Zaoud personally.

Zaoud’s English language title conference this August in a Sydney mosque was “From the illegal to the legal and the untold dangers of homosexuality”. Video of the conference was uploaded online along with an apologetic message: “DISCLAIMER: Those who challenge LGBTQ advocates’ normalcy and equivalence arguments predictably face the jamming tactic of being tagged. [sic.] fanatical, hateful and homophobic in order to anticipate a reasonable debate. To disagree with LGBTQ sexual practice is not an incitement to harassment, phobia or violence, but an expression of an opinion firmly rooted in the medical literature.

As far as the public knows, Zaoud is not a medical professional. And looking at his remarks in the lecture, it’s hard to see how they can be understood as anything other than not-so-disguised homophobia and hatred.

Homosexuality is “the opposite of the intellect”

Zaoud opens his speech with what resembles the reception of homosexuals in the public. “I am aware that there might be some gay people among us who sit or people who have those urges. And I say to those people that you are more than welcome to stay with us, ”he says. But his real intentions quickly turn out to be quite different: “We want to educate you on this subject. We want to share intellectual points and evidence from the Quran and the word of [the prophet Muhammad]…this knowledge we share empowers you to make the right decisions in life.

Speaking about the different gender identities generally accepted today in the West and the fact that same-sex marriage has recently become legal in several countries (including Australia), Zaoud says that today “sexual deviation has become a widespread problem “. He later protests that “the rest of us are slowly being forced to accept all of this and support all of this as well”.

According to Zaoud, these processes result from humanity’s loss of modesty. Someone in this state “is a person whose heart is dead. Accordingly, you will find him doing what he wants and what his desire calls him to do. After presenting several quotations from Islamic scriptures and traditions, Zaoud concludes that the Prophet was worried and concerned about “the homosexuality that is spreading among his Ummah”. [Islamic Nation].”

“The first point is how homosexuality went from illegal to a crime punishable by law,” Zaoud asks. “How did it go from that to becoming decriminalized, and becoming legal, and now it’s legally recognized by the majority of the world. How did that happen?”

His response: “First of all, keep in mind this, any evil that turns from evil to something good, there are definitely the hands of the Sheitan. [Devil] at work.” The Devil, explains Zaoud, “decorated the sin” of homosexuality by “changing”[ing] the name. Homosexuality is called love. Love is love with a rainbow color, it decorates the deed, decorates the sin, and people are gradually getting immersed in these kinds of sins and deeds.

The next step is to normalize sin. ” It continues. This normalization process does not stop. Everywhere you go, and in schools, it’s in your face. This is all part of the standardization process. Gay rights supporters are “patient with their lies. They are patient with evil. […] every year there is a Pride March! laments Zaoud.

“In Islam,” Zaoud explains, homosexuality is referred to as “the vulgar and shameless immoral act and action.” It is “The immoral act, that is to say, all the senses of immorality are found in homosexuality. All senses of vulgarity are found in homosexuality.

Moreover, in the Koran, continues Zaoud, there is a reference suggesting “a link between this act and the intellect of a person”. Citing Islamic traditions, Zaoud describes homosexuals as people “deeply immersed in a state of intoxication and confusion. They are blinded by their drunkenness, drunkenness affects what? It affects a person’s intelligence. It is “the complete absence of the intellect, when the mind does not think rationally. And this happens when a person allows his desire to overcome his intellect. A person has a desire and has an intellect, and when the desire prevails and overcomes the intellect. Now a person is in a state of intoxication.

“And this is the case for homosexuals. The mind does not think rationally. They would commit immorality… based on their Shahowa [lust] and not based on the intellect. Since the male and female private parts are intended for reproduction, “anyone who uses his organ for purposes other than [for which] it was created, you don’t use your intellect,” concludes Zaoud. When homosexuals use these and other organs (talking about the anus) not for biological purposes, “there is confusion. There is bewilderment. There is deviance.”

hate gays

Zaoud reviews the history of recent changes in legal and social norms that have led to the normalization of homosexuality, consistently criticizing gay rights advocates. For example, describing the 1969 Stonewall Riots by pro-gay activists in the United States, Zaoud says that “whoever is on the lie has no intellectual argument. If he doesn’t get what he wants, he will get it by violence.

Protesting what he describes as the acceptance and publicity of homosexuality among Muslims, Zaoud warns that “in Islam, the act is Haram [forbidden] and supporting the act is just as bad.

Homosexuals are dangerous because they are sexually insatiable and know no boundaries, says Zaoud. “There is no limit, a person who commits homosexual sexuality. Only one does not satisfy him. You find two, three, four or five, maybe the same night, that’s what Haram does. And you’ll never be satisfied and you’ll never be satisfied no matter what a person says.

Zaoud complains bitterly that respect for single-sex families is taught and promoted in schools, at sporting events, etc. “I am not a lawyer. I am not here to defend your cause and I am not here to defend your rights. I can’t stand this. I do not believe it.

“As a Muslim, how do we feel about homosexuality? Very simple”, explains Zaoud quoting Islamic traditions: “I have a passion, an extreme hatred for your sin” (he will later say with morality that hatred does not justify violence).

Next on Zaoud’s agenda: “The unspeakable dangers of homosexuality […] There are major sexual and psychological health risks that a person should be aware of if they were to engage in the action of homosexuality.

“Did you know that anal penetration is the riskiest (sic) form of sexual behavior a person can engage in? It’s the riskiest [sic] form of sexual practice. Zaoud lists at this point diseases such as hepatitis, HIV, HPV, STDs, anal cancer and even monkeypox which he says are mostly linked to homosexuality.

To warn people of the dangers of homosexuality, Zaoud jokes: “I believe that on every rainbow flag [the LGBTQI+ flag], there should be a picture up top…of someone with anal cancer,” and the crowd erupts in laughter. “It’s serious,” smiles Zaoud. “This is a warning…there should be a fair image to warn people of what’s to come, what you’re getting yourself into.” It is a path of no return. There is no remedy. There is no treatment for these issues.

In addition, Zaoud warns, there is “the punishment of Allah, the curse of Allah, the punishment that a person faces in the grave, in the hereafter before Allah… These people have distorted the natural temperament of the human being”.

In the conclusion of his speech, Zaoud ridicules the divisions and disagreements within the LGBTQI+ community as proof that this group is weakened. “It won’t last. It won’t last until we have believers in the truth.

ASWJ’s Abu Bakr Zaoud spreads hatred and fear against members of Australian society. His messages are clearly not acceptable or in line with Australian values of respect for others and social cohesion, and he must be clearly marginalized for his extremism.
